Antiwrinkle injections

Antiwrinkle injections are used for reducing/smoothing wrinkles, generally in the upper face. Using a type ‘A’ toxin called Botulinum, it blocks muscle nerve signals that weakens the muscles responsible for producing facial expression lines, e.g. frown lines, crow’s feet and horizontal forehead lines. Botulinum can be used in the sweat glands to reduce perspiration.

Very fine needles are used to inject into the specific muscles, there may be some redness and bruising following treatment. This procedure produces minor discomfort, topical and/or local anaesthetic can be administered if necessary.

The are some side effects associated with this treatment, the most common are headaches and injection reactions like redness, bruising and swelling. There is also a small possibility of the toxin affecting other muscles away from the injection site. We take every care to keep these risks to a minimum.

The initial treatment becomes viable within 5 days, but the maximum effect is reached in 1-2 weeks. The effect of treatment is generally 3-4 months, but can be 6 months for armpits.

IMPORTANT
This treatment is not suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have any muscle or bleeding disorders.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA) that is found naturally in the skin which gives it its elasticity. HA exists naturally in living organisms and is identical between species and tissues. The fillers we use are not permanent and can be dissolved if necessary. Fillers do not affect facial expression and can give a subtle, youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers are used to reduce lines, folds and wrinkles. Most commonly in the lower face. The lines that we can soften include the nose-lip line (naso-labial), smoker’s lines and marionette lines (corner of lip down to chin). Replace lost volume, this is often in the midface, replacing the volume in the cheek area and sometimes the hollows under the eyes (tear troughs). Facial contouring, fillers can be used to enhance jawlines, chins, cheekbones, lips and noses.

A topical anaesthetic will be used, to anaesthetise the area. The filler is then injected to instantly lift the skin and soften the lines. Redness and swelling is to be expected but usually settles within 2 – 4 days. Lip swelling can be expected for up to a week. The effect improves once this redness and swelling has disappeared.

The main side effects from the injection include redness, swelling, pain, itching and bruising. Allergic reaction is always a rare possibility. We use Restylane and Pluryal products in the clinic which have a very good safety record, and typically last for 6-12 months.

All treatments are carried out in a sterile, clinical environment with strict cross-infection protocols. We are healthcare professionals with our primary concern being your health and well-being.
